Support our goal to get kids on bikes in schools!

The Jeff Moores Bicycle Initiative

Following the success of the Naperville North Bike Program, our goal is to provide Naperville CUSD 203 elementary students with an opportunity to learn bicycling -- a lifelong activity that benefits overall health. Many students have not learned the skill of bicycling or do not have access to bicycling equipment due to financial constraints. This initiative will allow all elementary students in Naperville CUSD 203 an opportunity to learn and practice bicycling skills, etiquette, and safety in Kindergarten through 5th grade physical education classes.

Seeking funding for 60 bicycle sets

Funds secured for this project will help purchase two sets of ability-appropriate bicycle equipment. Specifically, the funds will purchase 30 balance bicycles for beginners, and 30 bicycles for students who are advanced. Along with the bicycles, 35 helmets will also be purchased, along with a curriculum plan to introduce and implement bike safety in physical education classes.

About the Program

The Jeff Moores Bike Initiative is designed to give every K-5 student the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike and develop a lifelong skill that can have a lifelong effect on their health, safety, citizenship, and social-emotional learning.

The Jeff Moores Bike initiative is named in honor of Jeff Moores, a PE teacher at Maplebrook Elementary. Jeff served in Naperville District 203 for many years, and was an avid outdoorsman that really enjoyed biking and hiking. Jeff retired several years ago and unfortunately became ill and passed away last December. We as colleagues and friends of Jeff, would like to name this for him to honor his memory and dedication to the PE department in Naperville 203 and to all of his former students at Maplebrook Elementary.

We believe that the skill of riding a bike should be made available for every single student that attends a school in our community. By introducing the skill at school, during PE class, and continuing to develop that skill through their elementary experience, students will gain a lifelong skill and access to a healthy outdoor activity. This allows all students the access and opportunity to learn and develop a bike riding skill that will last a lifetime under qualified and trained PE professionals.
